Reduce the size of the AVI video file while keeping the quality almost completely intact.

Many of us record gameplay while playing games using various tools (tools like Nvidia, Radian software, Windows default software or MSI Afterburner / Fraps). But a common problem we often read is that the size of these recorded files is too large. It can be seen that the video of 1 second is above 1 GB and when recording for a long time, it is seen that the size is no longer on the hard drive. And uploading such files is also a big hassle.

If you reduce the size with these different tools, you will lose a lot of quality which is not suitable for use.

Today we will talk about a tool with which we can reduce the size of the video without losing much quality.

Whatever it takes:

  1. VirtualDub (open source software) (link below)
  2. xviD Codec (free) (link is given below)

The condition file must be of AVI format (very important)

*** AVI output files are available on MSI Afterburner or Fraps, other capture tools may also have left AVI output files (I did not mention that I did not use Radeon, Geforce's recording software) ***

First, you need to download the two tools mentioned, you have to install Xvid, you can run it directly if VirtualDub Portable, otherwise you have to install it. After that, we can start our work.

Step-1

Open VirtualDub, you can drop down the file you want or select File>Open Video file from here.

Reduce the size of the AVI video file while keeping the quality almost completely intact.
File selection

Step-2

Go to Video Options, click on Compression in the Drop-Down menu. Select Xvid Mpeg-4 Codec and click OK.

Reduce the size of the AVI video file while keeping the quality almost completely intact.
select Compression from the video option

Reduce the size of the AVI video file while keeping the quality almost completely intact.
Select XVID MPEG-4 Codec

Step-3

Click on File> Save AS AVI. Your work is done. Wait for the process to finish. How long it will take will depend on the main file size. The output file will be saved in My Document.

Reduce the size of the AVI video file while keeping the quality almost completely intact.
Select Save AS AVI from the file menu

Reduce the size of the AVI video file while keeping the quality almost completely intact.
Processing. when its finished, you are all done!!!

These steps are enough for our general users.

1. In my personal test, the size of a 20-second 1.41 GB file has come down to 8 megabytes in the same frame with the same resolution. And the quality was almost 100 percent the same, in some cases may be a change in color/contrast that you can adjust in custom settings.

This test took 1 min 30 seconds to compress the 1.41 GB file size (Raisen system).

2. This test has been performed on both Intel and AMD Raizen systems, and optimization has been found in both systems. No issues were noticed.

(Intel processor: Core i5 6500 with b150m-d3h, 8GB 2400 BUS RAM, XFX RX 570 8GB)
(AMD processor: AMD RYZEN 5 1600 with b450m-s2h, 8GB 2400 BUS RAM, XFX RX 570 8GB)

(However, in the case of Raizen, the test uses the latest 2020 radio driver because Intel did not have the 2020 driver when the test was done earlier, and Windows versions are different)

3. In the case of the test with AMD Ryzen, I recorded the whole process with an APP screen and in that case the temperature reading of the processor in MSI Afterburner was 50 or less before the start of processing and at one stage of the process it went up to 57) The temperature of the graphics card was normal. Custom fan speed) RAM and disk usage was not tracked.

4. Those who want to change the video in advance user or more details, they can configure the frame rate by clicking on Frame Rates in the video drop-down menu before processing, there are various options. You can also configure Codec during codec selection. You can select different color-related options/methods from the Color Depth option and you can change the output. You can customize the start, stop time of the video in the Select Range option if you do not want to use the whole video. (However, I tested this option with what was the default.)
You can make various audio-related settings from the Audio drop-down menu.

5. If you can figure out if you can work with any file other than AVI, MPG, MPEG, MPV, be sure to let us know in the comments #HELP_OTHERS #HELP_YOURSELF

6. If anyone finds more optimized and effective settings of this tool by trying different settings, you can also share it in the comments.

7. VirtualDub-1.10.4-AMD64 and the latest version of Xvid have been used in my testing. Note that K-Lite Codec Pack was installed but I think it has nothing to do with this test.
